25 NOV – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
New UN Women data confirms violence against women has worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report launch kicks off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, from 25 November to 10 December, under the theme, “Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now!”UN Women
As the restrictions tighten, seemingly daily, as the government attempts to end or at least control the fourth wave of the Covid-pandemic, the State Theatre Darmstadt is participating in the international campaign “Orange the World – End Violence Against Women”.
Nearly 1 in 3 women have been abused in their lifetime. In times of crises, the numbers rise, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent humanitarian crises, conflicts and climate disasters. A new report from UN Women, based on data from 13 countries since the pandemic, shows that 2 in 3 women reported that they or a woman they know experienced some form of violence and are more likely to face food insecurity. Only 1 in 10 women said that victims would go to the police for help.United Nations
Between 5 and 8 pm on the 25th of November, the theatre will be illuminated in orange. On the Büchnerplatz, in front of the house, one will be able to visit an audio installation. Together with colleagues I’ve read and recorded texts by Margarete Stokowski, Mithu Sanyal, Virginie Despentes, Christina Clemm, Carolin Emcke and Jorinde Minna Markert. Texts that are delivering facts and sharing experiences. They are not very pleasant, but, important.
I’m glad that I, even with a small gesture, can be a part of and give voice to this important, international campaign.
